How is this done?

You can use language to hypnotize people you talk to. What I mean is that you can actually speak to the subconscious mind when you use the correct words and speak in the right tones. By doing this you have a huge ability to help people see things your way and even change how they see the world around them.

This allows you to change how people behave by subliminally placing hypnotic suggestions during a friendly conversation.

So what are the "right things to say?

Reaching the subconscious mind is not as hard as you may think. One of the best hypnotists ever, Milton Erickson, developed a model for what I will call conversational hypnosis that has three basic steps. This is called the Milton Model. The three stages of the Milton Model are:

Stage 1.

Look for clues that tell you how the person sees the world, or a specific problem you are working on. Pay attention to the language the person uses. How does he describe what he is feeling, seeing, hearing, etc. Once you see the patterns then you can use the persons experiences to gently draw their attention away from the outside world and into their own inner experience.

One way to do this is to ask questions like What was that like for you? or How do you feel about that?

This is focusing them inward where they will understand how their world view makes them feel.

Stage 2.

The next stage of the Erickson Model is aimed at distracting the person's conscious mind. Milton Erickson did this by speaking with complex and ambiguous langauge.

Erickson would chose words having the same sound, but with different meanings. Example words are sale-sail, wander-wonder, hear-here, right-write.

Milton deployed double binds to present only the set of options he desired. He'd say things like: We don't know if you'll begin a trance not or in 10 minutes.

The words he uses allow the subconscious only two alternatives: fall into a trance now or in a few minutes. This is also an example of an embedded command, fall asleep now or very soon.

When words are incorrectly used, it confuses and distracts the conscious mind. This causes the conscious mind to look inward, asking for help from the subconscious mine.

Well, that's a couple Milton Model techniques of mind distraction. I really don't know if you would want to learn a lot more about the Milton Model of conversational hypnosis now or later :)

STAGE 3.

Finally, once the conscious mind has been sufficiently distracted, the final stage in the Milton Model is to uses the resources of the subconscious mind.

You can do this in a couple of ways. The most basic is by embedding commands in questions or sentences, so that they are not too obvious to the conscious mind, but are very obvious to the subconscious mind.

Some examples are things like:

--Who knows if you will certainly wash to dishes right away --You should do it, shouldn't you? --You are going to do this, didn't you? (this sounds like it doesn't make any sense, but your subconscious mind will hear the command)

So you may be asking yourself, self if I just say confusing things to people, or things that have embedded commands in them, then I can get people to do whatever I want them to?!

Well, my answer to that is maybe.

The important point of conversational hypnosis is that you can only make someone do something that does not violate their beliefs and values.

You are able to use conversational hypnosis to give commands to someone's subconscious mind, but it will take a good deal more than just conversational hypnosis to actually change her value or belief system.

LeRoy Grannis grew up living beachfront. He was in the water from the young age of 5, swimming and body surfing with his father. Once he was bored with swimming, Grannis made himself a wood bellyboard which he would ride at his mother's house in Florida.

He moved onto a kneeboard in 1931, it was a 6' x 2' made from a piece of pine. After growing accustomed to the kneeboard, Grannis started borrowing stand up surfboards from friends in Hermosa. Once he started surfing he was hooked, joining the Palos Verdes Surf Club.

Grannis eventually grew up and had a hard time balancing school, work, surfing and family life. He studied at UCLA until the Depression, after which he had to quit and take a job as a carpenter.

Pacific Bell is the next place Grannis found himself working, thanks to some surf buddies of him arranging a job for him. With the new found income, Grannis had the time and money to start practicing his photography craft, which would later become a new career path.

The first photos of Grannis to be published were put into Doc Ball's book, California Surfriders. This success brought Grannis closer to the surfing community and he started surfing in contests and working with the United States Surfing Association.

Grannis eventually had too much on his plate with surfing, work and family life and ended up with an ulcer. His doctor recommended that he take some time off from his job to recover. During his time off, Grannis started getting more serious with his photography practice. As his skills improved he started having some of his work published in magazines like Surfer, Reef and Surfing Illustrated.

Grannis became one of the most important photographers of his time because of the amount of surfing culture that he documented. What made Grannis more successful than other photographers of his time was his invention that allowed him to change film while in the water. This saved him a lot of time, and allowed for more great shots.

Grannis spent 10 years photographing the world's best surfers in Hawaii and California. He later became the photo editor of Surfing Illustrated and International Surfing which he help start.

LeRoy was elected to the International Surfing Hall of Fame and the best photographer in 1966. He was also awarded a lifetime achievement award in 2002. He was also the the subject of a Surfer's Journal article ode to master photographers.

Grannis now has a limited edition book title Birth of Culture and his photos have also been featured in the recent film Riding Giants.
